Working Scientifically
We had a brilliant family learning morning today. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us today to share in some science investigation work with the children. The teachers really appreciated your willingness to get ‘stuck in’ and to support the children in their learning. Fifty one visitors is a fantastic result.
We chose to share our science lessons with you because we’d had feedback that you would enjoy some practical sessions as part of our family learning mornings and science offered a really good opportunity to meet this request.
Working scientifically is one of the golden threads running through our science curriculum and we always have a focus on this in our last term of the year. When we reviewed our science curriculum, particularly after lockdowns, we could see that the practical element and the time needed to develop the associated skills just wasn't enough to support the children's progress in this area so we added in some extra lesson time for this at the end of each year. When children are confident in running investigations, they can focus on what they are learning from the investigation rather than just focusing on the process of investigating. Teachers plan investigations linked to the topics they have learnt over the course of the school year. This helps to embed their learning and gives the opportunity to revisit any areas where children’s understanding was a bit weaker or where they could be pushed and challenged. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the children consistently tell us that investigations are their favourite part of science at school and we want them to enjoy their learning as much as possible. We hope all our visitors had lots of fun this morning. Huge thanks to all of our wonderful staff for the preparation and work which went into making this morning so successful.
